One of the game’s all-time greats, Sachin Tendulkar , announced his retirement from one-day cricket, bringing to an end a glorious 23-year-old career in the format during which he rewrote numerous batting records. “I have decided to retire from the One-Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest,” the 39-year-old said in a statement released by the BCCI today. “I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years,” he added. Tendulkar, considered the most complete batsman in modern cricket and one who was considered next only to the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, retires from the ODI format at the top of the run-getters’ list. Tendulkar goes out after amassing 18,426 runs in 4

India have won their seventh consecutive test match

India won the first Test against Pakistan by six wickets Cricinfo 26 Nov'07: Handshakes all around as the players congratulate each other on a hard fought and thoroughly engrossing Test match. Tendulkar and Laxman walk off to loud cheers from the Feroz Shah Kotla. India needed just 6.2 overs this morning to score the 32 runs needed for victory. Tendulkar scored 24 of them off only 24 balls. Anil Kumble is the Man of the Match for his captaincy , his seven wickets and a useful 24 in the first innings. Kumble: "This ground has been very special, everything had happened on this ground. I think the boys responded really well and getting Pakitan out under 250 in both innings was creditable. The partnerships between Laxman and Dhoni, Dravid and Jaffer and Sachin and Ganguly were all very crucial. [On his own performance] It was excellent to get into the [bowling] groove right away. Three months is a long break at my age and I'm very happy with my performance." So that&

Dravid's omission surprises many

Image
Rahul Dravid being dropped from the Mumbai match is a clear signal that the former captain's place in the one day side is once again under scrutiny. Dravid is the first to admit that the shorter format of the game is not his forte, yet so far he has managed to adapt and create spaces for himself. Now time seems to be running out. He has scored 51 runs from five innings at an average of 10. Is that deemed as a big enough failure to drop a player like Rahul Dravid. Well certainly not, is what the cricketing fraternity has to say including the Australian captain Ricky Ponting. "I was quite surprised (at Rahul being dropped). He's done very well for India," Ponting said. "It's shocking you cannot treat a player like this," said Vinod Kambli, former India captain. Recent stats show that Dravid is in the worst slump of his one day career, and he stands alone amongst India's 'Big 3' in his failure to perform over the last 10 innings. He averages a m

India in safe hands: Sachin Tendulkar

Lavishing praise on the Mahendra Singh Dhoni led Indian team for winning the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar said Indian cricket was now in safe hands. Tendulkar, along with ageing stalwarts Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid , had opted out of the Twenty20 event while Dhoni was named captain of a young side that went all the way to win the title beating archrivals Pakistan. Tendulkar hailed the win as a complete team effort and singled out Dhoni for special praise. "It was a brilliant team effort and along with the players, the entire nation is celebrating. Dhoni led the team to a fabulous victory and I can say that Indian cricket is in safe hands," he said. India's 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev said with this win, Dhoni and his teammates had become part of Indian crick et lore. "I can guess that they are now so overwhelmed in joy that it will take time before the feeling sinks in. When they come back, they will realise

Shane Warne toasts Little Master in his top 50

Image
As lists go, it is understandable if Shane Warne's top 50 (published by the Times, UK ) is even more subjective than authors generally are when tackling people and events in a large time frame like a long cricket career. The list is also very cheeky, which is quite in keeping with the show boat leg spinner's character. While there could have been only a 50:50 argument over whether Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara would head the Victorian's list, his treatment of contemporary Australian greats has made this typically, to invent a word, "Warnesque". Steve Waugh , Test cricket's most successful captain who also won one World Cup for Australia, is rated a lowly No. 26. The "Ice Man" captained Warne in some of his most productive years. Yet, under the surface there must have been such tensions in a team that rolled on like a juggernaut through 16 successive Test wins. The passage of time may heal most fissures. Warne is, however, a different kettle

India Vs England - Sachin Tendulkar inspires to win

Image
Sachin Tendulkar inspired India to beat England by two wickets to win the sixth one-day international at the Oval here on Wednesday and so level the seven-match series 3-3. England's total of 316-6, built around Owais Shah's unbeaten 107 and capped by 30 off the final over from Dimitri Mascarenhas, had seemed commanding, but India's reply got off to a superb start. Sachin Tendulkar , who batted brilliantly, and Sourav Ganguly added 150 for the first wicket, setting up an enthralling finish. Ganguly went for 53, slapping Stuart Broad to Kevin Pietersen at cover, and England were given hope as Paul Collingwood pulled off a superb catch to remove Tendulkar for 94 as he drove uppishly at Monty Panesar. That hope was enhanced when Yuvraj Singh and Rahul Dravid fell cheaply. Gautam Gambhir followed for 47, but MS Dhoni and Robin Uthappa tipped the balance back towards India. Robin Uthappa played a nerveless innings to guide India to a thrilling two-wic
